if you realize you’ve been studying for hours: grab a snack to refuel your body and watch a sitcom to refuel your brain. then back to the books.

if you’re feeling stressed out: take some deep breaths, text your friends, maybe stare at a wall for a few minutes. gather yourself.

if you can’t seem to focus: get moving and get outside. take out the garbage, check your mail box, maybe walk your dog. just get moving and get fresh air. it’ll help bring you back.

if there’s something else going on in your life and you can’t get it off your mind: write down what’s going through your head, sort of like a diary entry. it’ll help you work things out.

if you’re just mentally and physically exhausted: set a timer for 25-30 minutes and take a nap. any longer and you’ll hit REM and you’ll wake up feeling just as tired. once you wake up, get some caffeine in you.

if the material is boring as hell: find another way to study. see if there’s a crash course video online about it or draw out what you’re trying to learn in diagrams and pictures to make it fun.

if people around you won’t shut up: listen to some music. soundtrack and classical music is always good because they won’t absorb you as much as music with lyrics. white noise (like ocean waves, rain sounds, etc.) also works.

if you only half understand a concept: call/message a friend who’s not in the class and try to teach the material to them. this will help you mentally work through the material and will help you remember it as well.

Appropriate SAT words

hirutanstudies:

Getting a bad teacher is always unfortunate, but...

intellectys:

Getting a bad teacher is always unfortunate, but you can still learn the material & manage to ace the exams! Even if they don’t teach you anything, they still might have resources you can use, and there are plenty of other ways to take your learning into your own hands.

Get resources from the teacher!

Ask for a textbook to take home. If you don’t have a book or something similar, ask for your own book, an online textbook, or another resource that you can learn from.

Get worksheets and practice problems. Teachers usually have really good resources, even if they aren’t good at what they do. Get relevant worksheets, online recommendations, or other resources.

See if you can get help during free time. Ask your teacher if they have any open hours to get help, or ask specifically if you can go in during your lunch, or before or after school for extra assistance.

Learn from textbooks!

Take very comprehensive notes. If you don’t have a good teacher, you’re going to need to get the material from somewhere, so your notes need to be extremely thorough.

Use supplementary books. A lot of subjects– especially AP classes with standardized exams– have books from publishers like Barron’s, Kaplan, and Princeton Review to help you learn the information.

Make flashcards & extra study tools. Since you don’t have the variety of learning methods you might in a good class, learning in every way you can is even more important to ensure that you do well!

Use online resources!

Check YouTube for instructional videos. If you need to know about it, there’s a fantastic chance that YouTube has it. Standbys include Khan Academy, Bozeman Science, and Crash Course.

Make use of masterposts. If someone has already compiled oodles of resources for you, they’re definitely worth checking out! Plus, if they’re student recommended, there’s a better chance that they’ll be helpful.

Find free questions. Exam boards like the College Board publish questions (and answers!) online, and these are super useful for knowing how well you’re doing.

Ask for extra help!

Talk to older students for tips. If they’ve been through the class before, they usually know what the teacher is missing out and also how to do well.

See if your school has a tutoring programme. Some schools have teacher or peer tutoring programmes where you can get one-on-one help without having to pay for a more expensive professional tutor.

Get a friend to help you. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help! If your friend is a science genius and your physics teacher is atrocious, it’s always worth a shot to ask.

Good luck! You can still do fantastically, and hopefully you’ll have some better teachers next year.

Sometimes, when we are presenting, our bodies act...

libraery:

Sometimes, when we are presenting, our bodies act completely irrationally. Sweating, stuttering, or just shutting down completely are all things I have encountered during public speaking; behaviour that is usually connected to extreme danger and fleeing behaviour. Completely unnecessary, as your teacher won’t kill you (hopefully), but trying to convince your body to be just as rational is a tough task. Turns out that this is exactly what we’re going to do.

The basis for this (personal) advice all lies in my musical training, where posture is extremely important. Performance practice lessons have taught me one important thing: you can trick your body into thinking it’s okay, and with that, your audience. disclaimer: I have posted this information before in a slightly different way. Regard this as an updated version. Hopefully one with better spelling.

hoooooow???

Stand up and try to follow these instructions. I’m your only audience right now, so mistakes aren’t a problem.

Start by relaxing your shoulders. Many people tense their shoulders when they’re anxious, which is a very natural reaction. However, tension in your shoulder automatically reaches through to your back and arms, and even your neck, tensing up your entire upper body. It’s confirming to your brain that yes! this is scary! Well, brain is wrong and we’re going to prove it wrong by relaxing our shoulders. Just let them hang down (make sure you don’t start leaning forward though, it should be just your shoulders). Doesn’t that immediately feel more relaxed?

Keep your feet a little bit apart, firm on the ground. This sends the message to your brain and audience that a single push will not have you fall over. Standing with your legs closely together simply isn’t as stable, and you want to radiate stability and confidence. Even if you’re feeling dizzy, this simple way of pretending will keep your feet on the ground. Literally.

Chin up, back straight, eyes at the audience. I used to tend to look at the ground, or to lean forward. No, no no! You want to maintain an open posture, and to address the entire audience. When you do this, you’ll look more secure, and maybe you’ll even notice people will listen to you more closely. Make sure you address the entire room, and not just one spot. if you’re scared to look at faces, look at the back wall. But not just one spot, find some nice different wall spots to look at.

What to do with your hands? I know I used to put my hands in my pocket, or fidget with something. Instead, try to talk with your hands more. When you’re using gestures, people will usually pay more attention to what you’re saying, and they’ll sometimes understand more easily (if you’re interested as to why, message me).

Do not hide. This is special advice to musicians, too. I used to hide behind my music stand because it was nice and safe. During public speaking it’s easy to hide behind some notes or to stand behind other people of your group, maybe. Don’t. Remember, fake the confident posture till you make it.

When you’re finished, don’t stop pretending just yet. When people ask how it went, always say it went okay. This is so so so important! Because if you’d say “ugh it was awful!! So many things went wrong, I suck at presenting!” they’ll start thinking hmm, yeah, there were indeed some mistakes… Could have been better. Whereas if you just say it was okay or good, or even decent, they’ll hardly even question it and will most likely remember the positive aspects, as humans tend to do.

I promise this works, at least to some extent. It may not help you get rid of anxiety right away, especially in really severe cases, but it can help you feel more at ease in front of a group. After that, you can start working on other things, such as volume, intonation, powerpoint use etc.

Just take a few seconds before you start talking to breathe, focus on those muscles, and to follow this with an amazing presentation (and a good grade).

You can always send me an ask for advice on public speaking! Even though I’m not a professional coach or whatever, I have overcome my speaking anxiety and maybe I can be of any help at all <3

School-Related Masterpost

magicalflails:

Who can resist reading another little post full of tips to help you get more work done? Here is a few things that I find useful when trying to get myself motivated.

Clear desk, clear mind - I like to organise things before I start working. If things are messy, I get a little preoccupied and procrastinate even more. My suggestion is clear your desk, sort everything you’ll need to study and get on!

The two minute rule - If a task that needs to be done takes less than two minutes, just do it. My dad has often suggested that this is a great way to sort out your priorities and so far it has worked for me. Things like check my emails, cross off events from my planner, file something away don’t take long but get you in the mood for productivity. As they say “object in motion, stay in motion”.

Break your time up - Schedule your study time and any breaks you need to take. This helps structure your day and acts as a motivation to get things done. Especially if you can reward yourself at the end!

Leave your phone alone - Like most people I use my phone constantly but when I’m trying to work, it is best to leave it alone. Out of sight, out of mind. Try leaving it on silent and behind you so you aren’t tempted to pick it up after every beep. Use your break times to check it.

Find your top three to five priorities - Seeing a long list of things to do is usually, for some people, kind of counterproductive. Figure out the main things that need to be done and work on those. If you’re able to complete those main things, you’ll feel like you’ve accomplished the days necessities and may even want to complete some more.

Try using a mindmap instead of a to do list - Apparently using a mindmap layout instead of a traditional list can help boost productivity. It is a little more funky way to see all your outstanding tasks and might not look as overwhelming as a super long list.

Wear headphones - You don’t have to always listen to things but it can help block out any noise that can distract you. If you’re someone that likes some music, try songs with little or no words. This is a great playlist by Spotify.

Don’t multitask - As much as you think you can do it, trying to multitask usually ends up in a confused mess and takes twice the time. Stick to one task at a time. If you think of something you need to do, write it down and do it later.

Change things up - Doing the same things in the same place can get boring. Make the effort every now and then to change where you’re studying or how you’re studying. This can include moving your studying from the desk to the kitchen table for a change of scenery, or making flash cards instead of annotating your notes. Studying with a family member or friends is a fun way to get some work done!

Be positive - Most people have times when they just don’t want to study or anything, it is natural. However it is not worth sitting staring at your books in an unmotivated mood just waiting to feel inspired. If you’re not feeling it, do something else for a while. Come back to it a bit later and have another go. Usually walking away and coming back is all you need to feel more productive.

I hope these few tips are useful! These are the kind of things that work for me, so give them a shot and let me know if they help. Best of luck with your studies x

emmastudies:

How to set up and run a studygramDespite Tumblr...

emmastudies:

How to set up and run a studygram

Despite Tumblr being the first home of the study community, we’ve all since expanded to Instagram. Who can blame us? It’s great :’-) However, the two have some differences! I’ve previously covered the steps on running studyblr, but am now going through a few tips on starting a studygram. It is one of my most asked questions so I’ll try to be thorough, I hope this helps!

Starting the account

This is the easiest part! Sign up using a personal or blog dedicated email address, it is up to you. Instagram now allows you to run several accounts at a time which makes operating a studygram and personal account much simpler. Here is a couple of tips on setting up the page:

pick a funky username - generally, study related is going to be best for a studygram but definitely not a requirement. If you’ve got a Tumblr, you can always use the same username. You can do something similar to me, such as using your first name or go for something completely different. It is totally your choice!

create a personalised icon - these have become more popular recently since it helps to differentiate accounts! I’d recommend using canva.com, Photoshop or one from my account. Again, these are optional! Alternatively, you can use a selfie or random picture of your choice.

share a little about yourself - your bio is important too! You can design it any way you like. Most people will include their name and education level/system (high school, university, etc). This is completely up to you. If you want to have the gaps between like mine (@emmastudiess), type it on your notes and then copy + paste. Remember to add in your website/studyblr if you have one!

introduction post - as your first post, it is always nice to introduce yourself! Try including details about yourself, what you’re studying, where you’re from, your hobbies, some of your favourite accounts, etc. Feel free to tag or mention me in your post and I can check out your account!

deciding between business and personal accounts - whilst personal accounts are used by most of the studygram community, some people to prefer the business account since it gives you some additional features such as story links (when you have over 10,000 followers), analytics, and email/phone links on your profile. Whilst those are cool and somewhat useful, it isn’t a big plus! To set up a business profile, you have to have a Facebook page dedicated to your blog which is a bit of a hassle to set up - especially if you don’t want to use your personal account.

Taking and posting photos

deciding regularity - this is another thing that is totally up to you! When I first started using Instagram, I was posting three times a day (yes, three!). It was absolutely crazy and I wouldn’t ever suggest that :’-) I now post once a day if I can but sometimes every two days. You don’t have to upload each day but being active is obviously important for expanding your account!

take good quality photos - I use an iPhone 7 so you don’t need a fancy camera for it! Try to maximise natural lighting in each picture. Here are some other tips for taking pictures! Play around with angles and shots. Comparing my photos to when I started to now shows how much my style and photo taking has changed!

how to edit your photos - some people use alternative apps like VSCOcam (most popular) or Snapseed for this! The filters you use do depend on the kind of style you’d like your feed. I use Instagram to edit my pictures because I never liked needing to use several apps to get it how I wanted (I’m too lazy for that haha!). Here is my editing process if you’re interested.

develop a feed that you like - some people place a lot of emphasis on having an “aesthetic feed” but I feel like whilst it plays a part, it isn’t everything. Your studygram doesn’t have to be perfectly matching all the time. When I started my Instagram, I took my feed very seriously and got very stressed about how it looked. After a while, I realised it wasn’t worth the amount of pressure I put myself under. Try to not let it consume you!

Putting your account out there and building followers

use hashtags - this is a great way to promote your photos! Go with the most popular like #study #studygram #school #studies #studyinstagram. I will often hashtag what is in my photos, for example, #muji or #bulletjournal. You could even make a hashtag for just your posts. Use #emmastudies if there is something you’d like me to see! :-)

tag brands - this is another good way to get your posts noticed. If someone is checking out a brand’s Instagram, they may go through the tagged photos to use their products in action.

be active in the studygram community - follow anyone you find inspirational. You may be lucky to get some follow backs! I try to check out any studygrams that follow me! Like and comment on photos that you think are cool. Everyone in the studygram community loves hearing from their followers so even small comments like “I really like this spread” or “love this picture” can make someone’s day!

don’t be afraid to put yourself out there - I’ve made lots of amazing friends and met some lovely people! Strike up a conversation with any studygrammer you want too!

shoutouts - these are a common thing across all social media and can be great for getting extra exposure. It is always best to be polite when approaching about shoutouts since some people don’t always like to do them.

Additional pointers

studygram requirements - I’ve had numerous messages from people saying they are interested in starting a studygram but haven’t because they “don’t have nice writing”, “aren’t very artistic”, or “don’t own certain stationery” and it makes me really sad :-( You shouldn’t let these things stop you! I think we need to remember that whilst those things might help get notes, underneath that studygram is about our education and self-improvement! I think we need to be pushing that more, instead of an idealist version. A studygram should be a personal source of motivation and place to share your journey with others, not something where you feel pressured.

be nice, friendly and polite - I think this is the golden rule for any blogger. Treat everyone with respect. Be kind when communicating with them. Be grateful for your followers! They are voluntarily following you because they enjoy your posts - don’t take advantage of that.

remember to be realistic - it can be very easy to use Instagram to create a highlight reel of photographs but remember we’re all students! Things don’t always go perfectly. We aren’t productive all the time. It isn’t expected. (If you follow me, you’ll know I dedicate a lot of time to Game of Thrones and Buzzfeed Unsolved!!!) Let your followers know how your day is going and when things aren’t working out, or if they are! Everyone is supportive and will be happy to share some words of encouragement.

don’t steal content - if you take inspiration from another account, it is always nice to share that! For example, in the caption, you can write “I loved this post by @studyblogger101 and created an inspired version”. If you directly reblog someone, also be sure to tag and/or mention them. It is only fair to give correct attribution to the original owner. If you happen to see someone publishing another person’s photo without credit, it is always appreciated to share that or comment on the post.

keep it fun - as I mentioned, when I started I took Instagram quite seriously. I was really particular about it. I’ve now learnt that I don’t have to worry like I did. It is just a fun way to document my day-to-day life and doesn’t need to be a source of stress. We get worked up about these things sometimes, but remember to put it into perspective!

I hope this helps! I have loved being a part of the studygram community and seeing more people join would be awesome! Don’t forget to check out my account @emmastudiess!

Other posts | Printables | Instagram | Youtube | Pinterest

phctcsynthesis:

college advice part 1/7 : what to do when you need to miss class

→ header inspired by @thestudypeach | i’ve gotten quite a few asks + messages about this, so i thought i’d make a short masterpost over how to handle this!

these are just tips from what i’ve learned from my time at uni!!

this is college, not high school. you have to take responsibility. the professors won’t be on your ass to get stuff done. you need to know what you’re missing. they won’t care what you miss or what excuse you have. they’ll still expect you to know it, and they should. this is college.

check the attendance policy for EACH class, and each component if it has labs or recitations also. you need to know how many classes you can miss without being penalized. for example, my chemistry class never took attendance, but they provided notes + extra credit if you showed up. my bio class didn’t care + they put their lectures online my physics class allowed only 3 absences, as attendance was taken every lecture. LABS however, do not usually allow absences. my chem lab allowed 1 absence, my bio lab didn’t allow any at all. you need to figure out the attendance policy!! these are in place in case you are sick, need to miss class for a wedding, are on a school trip, etc. further excused absences are usually given for extended hospital stays, grievance, etc. with paperwork (NOTE: this is for my university only, but i assume it’s relatively the same at other large public universities across the US??)!

make at least two friends in each class you have. other people might say to make one friend, but the reason i say two is because that one person isn’t always going to be in class either. the more people who have your back when it comes to filling you in, the better.

go over the lecture material + do it thoroughly!! if you miss material, go over it!!! go over it three times! do what you need to do to understand it. write notes, read the book, look at the lecture notes if you have them from a friend. listen to the lecture if that’s an option. but learning the material as thoroughly as you can will help you to be better prepared for the next class and seeing your professor for help if you need to do so! just because you can’t make it to lecture doesn’t mean that you can’t learn to material!

go to office hours and go over the material you missed with the professor. but make sure you already know the material. if you already know the material briefly, you can ask more specific questions about what you don’t understand. professors are there to help, and to be honest, i’ve noticed that they love to see students and answer questions!

hope this helps! as always, my ask box is open 24/7 :)
